If you are new to the joy of metal detecting, but find the owner's manual to be overwhelming, don't panic. All the tips you need to know to get started are right here. Most detectors offer the same basic features, and we will help you understand what to do with all the knobs, how to turn them, and how to really enjoy working with your metal detector.

On and Off Volume

The most basic knob is the power switch. Many detectors feature an on-off knob that also controls the volume. Turning the knob clockwise will turn the detector on and increase the volume. As the knob is turned counter clockwise, the volume will decrease and then the detector will turn off.

The sensitivity knob does exactly what it says - causes your detector to tune in on metal objects. Turning this knob to the right, or clockwise, means it will be more sensitive to smaller objects and be able to detect them deeper in the ground. If you are working in an area that has a high content of minerals, however, you may find it becomes somewhat unstable and offers false signals.

The key is to adjust the detector to the point where it will be more stable, picking up treasures without detecting every metal. The key is understanding the environment you are searching in. When you are searching at a beach, the salt in the sand will have more minerals so the sensitivity level should be reduced. When you are searching on basic dirt the sensitivity should be increased. The main thing is to be will to try the machine at different levels. Starting with the setting at the middle point will be a great place to start.

Discrimination and Rejection

You may see this knob marked as DISC. This is where you can select what metals you are specifically searching for, or what metals you would like to specifically exclude from the search. The scale will typically include ground minerals - iron - aluminum - nickel - copper - silver; although they can be listed by numbers rather than names.

Many gold items fall under the category of aluminum-nickel, due to the metals that are mixed with gold when it is crafted. When you are searching for jewelry, take care that you do not automatically exclude these two categories. A safe bet is to keep the machine set on "nickel", because this will alert you to jewelry without picking up general iron junk that can be in the ground. This setting will also alert you to various coins. If you find that you are still pulling up a great deal of garbage, you can increase the settings.

The simple rule is when your signals are not coming often, and you're not digging much, turn your discrimination down lower. If you find yourself digging up way too much trash, then turn your discrimination all the way up and save your time and efforts.

RARITAN — For more than 25 years, Ronnie DeGhetto has had a fever— gold fever that is. The lifelong borough resident is a self-proclaimed treasure hunter and owner of The Gold Digger — a metal detector and treasure hunting business. It was a love of old pirate movies that got DeGhetto out on the search for treasure.

Like all things in life, the phrase "you get what you pay for" is true with Gold Metal Detectors. In my opinion to the more you pay the better it is.

Like all things in life, the phrase "you get what you pay for" is true with Gold Metal Detectors. In my opinion to the more you pay the better it is.

When buying a Gold Metal detector you will find they can be very expensive and a Good choice would be to try and source a second hand unit. I've found the best places to try are Amazon, Ebay and Craigslist. However look in your local newspaper's classified section and notice boards that have been put up in community centres, supermarkets and local newsagents all these are good places to try. Even at second hand the detector will be quite expensive and you should know what you're buying and its condition before you part with any money.

Once you've got your metal detector find out how to look after it. Follow the instructions carefully to get the best out of it. You could join a metal detecting club for like-minded people. They usually organise events and are more than willing to help novices get the best out of their detectors.

One of the best places to start your search for hidden riches is Your back garden that's right I'll say it again "your own back garden" think about it you might not find much but you'll get used to your detector find out what the best method is for you. I say you might find much however you never know. When my father bought a farmhouse I went over the garden with the detector and found a toy car from the 1920's value about $30.00 ok won't be able to retire on it but hey thirty bucks is thirty bucks. Other good places to try, the beach, ploughed fields, market venues and especially travelling fairs, once they've left can be a gold mine. (No pun intended) People seem to have far too much money and seem to scatter it about, but hey they're loss it our gain. Make sure you ask for permission before you go onto someone's land and start digging it up, as it does tend to upset the landowner. You could offer to split any finds you make with them to get them on your side.

Make sure you stay on the right side of the law with your gold metal detector never ever ever go to archaeological sites it is illegal and you are found out and you will be you'll be prosecuted make no bones about it, don't do it. Declare all finds of gold to stay within the law and to help with identification of coins and medals go to museums and speak to one of the staff. I have known museums to buy certain valuable items and this way everybody gets to enjoy your find.

Your out with your detector and you happen to come accross captain Kidds lost treasure. Once you've dug it up and you've finished excavating fill the hole back in and make sure everthing is as you found it. Just show some respect, its pretty easy common sense.

A metal detector on it's own is excellent, however you'll need more than just that if you would like be a success in your treasure hunting exploits. You will have to have some metal detector accessories to help as you go along. You can establish which accessories you need by first determining exactly where you will end up performing the majority of your hunting. What that indicates is that if you are utilizing your metal detector around the beach, you will require different add-ons than if you plan on doing your treasure hunting under water.

Some of the more common accessories include the following:

- Treasure hunting tools

- Scoops for sorting in the sand

- Anything else that may make the task easier

If You Hunt In Water You'll Need To have These Add-ons

Actually you'll find 3 key accessories you will need for water treasure hunting. You will need a water scoop. You will need a pouch to carry around the accessories. And obviously you will need another pouch or container to store all the treasures you will be acquiring.

You'll have plenty of choices when you are looking at scoops. The sunspot scoop is probably the most popular. It works great, but it will from time to time allow the tiniest items drop through the openings.

The scoop is designed to stay upright with a handle made from wood. When you have to draw the scoop up, the upright handle makes the job simple. These scoops might cause problems when there is surf in the waves. For a quick guideline, always hold the scoop so it's pointing toward the sea. It's most likely smart to practice on the sand before you go out in the waves.

Another metal detector accessory you should have is a treasure hunting pouch. You'll be utilizing this to carry any stuff you obtain. It is important that your pouch have zipper system. It's a wise idea to be sure this pouch is made from some kind of plastic material. The possibility of salt water corrosion is a drawback to some metal containers.

There are more accessories which may be required too. If you're venturing out past the coastline give some thought to gloves, boots, and waders. If you're going further out you'll need a mask and snorkel.

Metal Detector Accessories Needed On The Beach

First off, you'll need ground clothing that you will be wearing in your expedition. Its not necessary to buy anything brand new for this. If you've got some shorts or older jeans around, they'll do nicely.

Naturally you'll need something to dig with. A standard backyard garden trowel may be all you need here. A hunting knife from an Army Navy store is also frequently used. On the other hand now we have innovative digging tools that are far more efficient.

A Garret pocket probe and a beach or sand scoop are a few of the other metal detector accessories designed to be used on the beach.
